SUMMARY:Ferragosto at the Museums: in the city and the mountains
DESCRIPTION:Even during Ferragosto (Italy’s Assumption Day holiday)\, Pistoia and the Pistoia Mountains offer a wonderful opportunity to discover art\, culture and local traditions. \nOn Saturday\, 15 August 2026\, visitors can explore museums and cultural attractions\, discover hidden corners of the city and its charming villages\, and experience the unique heritage that makes this area so special. \nOpening hours and programme details are those provided by the participating institutions at the time of publication and may be subject to change. \nIn the city\nPistoia Civic Museums\n \nOn Saturday\, 15 August\, the Pistoia Civic Museums will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Museum of Ancient Art\, the Ceppo Hospital Museum\, and the Museum of the Twentieth Century and Contemporary Art. \nDon’t miss the exhibitions Marino Marini. Painting\, on display on the second floor of the Museum of the Twentieth Century and Contemporary Art at Palazzo Fabroni\, and Due ritratti pistoiesi di Giovanni da San Giovanni (Two Pistoian Portraits by Giovanni da San Giovanni)\, on view at the Museum of Ancient Art in the Town Hall. Both exhibitions will remain open until 27 September 2026. \nPistoia Underground\nPistoia Underground will remain open as usual\, with guided tours at 10:15 a.m.\, 11:30 a.m.\, 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Advance booking is recommended. \nThis is a unique opportunity to explore Tuscany’s longest underground route\, discover the history of the ancient Ceppo Hospital\, and learn how the Brana River came to be buried beneath the city. \nPistoia Musei\n \nOn Ferragosto (15 August)\, all Pistoia Musei venues will be open continuously from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.\, offering the perfect opportunity to visit the Museum of the Ancient Bishops’ Palace\, the Museum of San Salvatore\, and the Twentieth-Century Collections at Palazzo de’ Rossi. \nDiscover all the collections with the Museum Pass\, a single ticket that gives access to a fascinating journey through Pistoia’s art\, history and cultural heritage. Admission: €10 full price\, €7 reduced. \nRegional Directorate of National Museums of Tuscany\nA remarkable example of 16th-century military architecture\, Santa Barbara Fortress in Pistoia will be open to visitors on Saturday\, 15 August\, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. \nThe former Church of the Tau and the Oratory of San Desiderio will also be open by advance reservation only. Bookings must be made at least three days in advance by calling +39 0573 24212 or +39 055 265171 (Monday to Saturday\, 8:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.). \nAdmission is free at all venues. \nChurch Openings\nOn Ferragosto (15 August)\, the Cathedral of San Zeno o f Pistoia will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The Baptistery of San Giovanni in Corte will be open continuously from 10:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. \nThe Church of Sant’Andrea will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.\, while the Church of San Jacopo in Castellare will welcome visitors from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Admission is free. \nClick here to view the opening hours of Pistoia’s churches. \nPistoia Mountains\nPistoia Mountains Ecomuseum\n \nSpend Ferragosto in the Pistoia Mountains\, in the municipalities of San Marcello Piteglio and Abetone Cutigliano\, exploring the sites of the Pistoia Mountains Ecomuseum. Accompanied by expert guides\, you will discover the area’s natural and artistic treasures\, as well as its traditional crafts and centuries-old heritage. \nA wonderful opportunity to experience the summer surrounded by the history\, culture and nature of the Pistoia Apennines. \nClick here to view opening hours and plan your visit. \nGothic Line Museum – L’altro Lato del Caposaldo\nThis Ferragosto\, discover the Gothic Line Museum – L’altro Lato del Caposaldo in Pianosinatico (Abetone Cutigliano)\, dedicated to preserving the memory of the events that shaped this area during the Second World War. Throughout the summer season\, the museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. \nThe museum houses a remarkable collection of objects\, documents and wartime artefacts\, many of which were buried for decades or carefully preserved by local residents. Together\, these precious testimonies tell the dramatic story of a village devastated by war\, while helping to preserve the memory and historical awareness of those events. \nTwo hiking trails begin at the museum\, leading through the remains of the Gothic Line bunkers. The first is approximately 1.5 km long with 150 m of elevation gain\, while the second covers around 8 km with 360 m of elevation gain. \nAbetone Municipal Ski Museum\n \nIl Museo comunale dello Sci di Abetone rappresenta un luogo unico e affascinante per scoprire la storia di uno degli sport invernali più amati al mondo.
