Pistoia Musei presents ‘In Fabula’. Restored masterpieces of the Bigongiari Collection, an exhibition dedicated to recently restored paintings belonging to Piero Bigongiari‘s (1914-1997) collection. This important collection of 17th-century Florentine art was brought together by the well-known poet and man of letters over a forty-year period.
The idea emerged from a collaboration between Pistoia Musei and the Intesa Sanpaolo Bank with their common aim being to safeguard the deep bond that the poet had with the town, where he in fact lived from 1925 to 1937.
The exhibition, arranged on the museum’s ground and first floor of the renovated ‘‘Antico Palazzo dei Vescovi‘, enables you to discover once again some of the masterpieces of the poet and man of letters, Piero Bigongiari’s Collection and to appreciate elements of innovation that have emerged during their restoration and to understand further the bond between the works of art and the collector.
The exhibition is dedicated to ten recently restored paintings of the Bigongiari Collection which have been gathered thanks to the efforts of six groups of people coming from the local community, who have been capable of offering a new interpretation to each work. This is a project that demonstrates how museums can create an active dialogue with society and its area, by thinking over and again the logic of its own cultural offer.
Moreover, the exhibition would like to stimulate a moment of reflection on the role of art and museums as active forces within the public and today’s society. Next to these works of art, you can see the results of a whole range of activities carried out by groups of people, institutions, and communities in and around Pistoia, invited to ‘converse’ with the paintings in a participatory way.
