A place for anyone who wants to delve deeper into the history of a region that has made sport, the mountains, and hospitality its defining strengths.
Inaugurated in July 2019, the Abetone Municipal Ski Museum (Museo dello Sci di Abetone) is a unique and fascinating destination to explore the history of one of the world’s most beloved winter sports.
Located within the schools of Abetone, in the municipality of Abetone Cutigliano, the museum pays tribute not only to the sport of skiing but also to the deep bond that connects this region to snow, mountains, and the athletic achievements that have made it famous.
Discovering Skiing
The museum houses a collection of equipment and artifacts related to the evolution of skiing, offering a captivating narrative that intertwines the history of the sport with the stories of the people and communities who have embraced it. It highlights how skiing has become an integral part of Abetone’s culture and traditions.
The visit is organized into themed rooms: the video room, the room dedicated to skis and boots, the room showcasing the history of ski lifts, and the recently inaugurated room on the evolution of ski sportswear. In this latest addition, visitors can admire a precious silk scarf designed by Florentine designer Emilio Pucci, a frequent visitor to Abetone, created as a tribute to skier Vittorio Chierroni.
The Champions
The museum also celebrates the champions who emerged from the Abetone Ski Club, founded in 1927, including Zeno Colò and Celina Seghi.
Zeno Colò (1920–1993) is still remembered as one of the greatest Italian skiers of all time. A world record holder in speed skiing, he was also a world and Olympic downhill champion in Oslo in 1952. Three of Abetone’s ski slopes are named “Zeno” in his honor.
Celina Seghi (1920–2022), who won a bronze medal in the slalom at Aspen in 1950, holds the record for the most medals won in the history of Italian Alpine skiing championships.
The Ski Museum also features panels dedicated to other great local champions, including Gualtiero Petrucci, Rolando Zanni, Vittorio Chierroni, Paride Milianti, Gaetano Coppi, and Luciano Seghi.
